Jaipur : Going into the final round with a five-shot cushion, Amanjyot Singh held on to win his first amateur title at the LG Rambagh Golf Club Championship at the club course here Friday. The 17-year-old, winner of last year’s British Junior Open, shot a final round three-over par 73.
Saurabh Bahuguna, the nearest challenger, was four strokes behind the Delhi amateur carding a two over 72 final round to finish at 285.
Simarjeet Singh, with a better final day card, finished third with Rahul Bajaj, both ending with 289. Tarun Ghogale was fifth at 290 while Vikram Rana was sixth at 292. Shubham Jindal and Rashid Khan were tied for the seventh place at 293.
“It is good to win at your home club. Yes I did have an advantage but the course played tough for all the players. I am overjoyed at my first amateur victory,” said Amanjyot.
With a five shot lead, Amanjyot adopted a defensive approach and made pars on the first five holes. Saurabh meanwhile bogeyed the third, but birdied the fourth as the lead remained constant.
Amanjyot dropped two bogeys as the lead was cut to three. However he restored the lead on the eighth with a birdie.
But he lapsed once again with three bogeys in the first five holes of his back nine. The lead at that stage was just two after 15 holes. This was after Saurabh had made a birdie on the 10th and bogeys on the 12th and 14th.
Saurabh’s double bogey on the par-3 16th turned the scales back in Amanjyot’s favour and increased the lead by four. He added one more shot with a birdie on the 17th. Saurabh made a birdie on the 18th but it was too late.
