Colombo : Three government soldiers were killed and another three injured in a claymore mine attack launched by Tamil Tiger rebels in Sri Lanka’s northern Vavuniya district Monday morning, defense officials said.

Officials from the Ministry of Defense said two Army soldiers and a Home Guard were killed when a military vehicle was caught by the claymore mine explosion in Madukanda around 9:45 a.m. (0415 GMT).

Three more soldiers suffered injuries due to the explosion.

Vavuniya is one of the major battle fields in the north witnessing escalating conflict between government troops and the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

Claiming discrimination at the hands of the Sinhala majority, the LTTE has been fighting the government since the mid-1980s to establish a separate homeland for the minority Tamils in the north and east.
