Tehran : Iran said Sunday it was ready to cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to remove ambiguities over its nuclear programme “within the framework of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT)”.

“Tehran is ready to respond to the remaining ambiguities regarding Iran’s peaceful nuclear programme to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) by March 2008,” foreign ministry spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini said here during his weekly press conference, IRNA news agency reported.

He was commenting on statements by IAEA Director General Mohamed El Baradei who recently said cooperation between Iran and the UN nuclear watchdog should get a quicker pace.

The spokesman said the nuclear dossier must return from the UN Security Council to the nuclear watchdog as it is the only internationally acknowledged body competent to deal with the issue.

“Issues which have so far been settled between Iran and the IAEA were all resolved within the timetable” agreed by two sides, Hosseini said.

El Baradei left the Iranian capital Sunday morning, winding up a two-day visit during which he met supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and other senior officials.

The US and some western powers suspect that Tehran has been carrying out a secret weapons programme in the name of a nuclear power project. The charge has been refuted by Iran.

Under the NPT, Iran as a signatory is entitled a civil nuclear programme and enrich uranium for power projects.
