A bench headed by Justice Ashok Bhan issued the notice, seeking response on the petition by the relatives of slain engineer Radhey Shyam.

The bench, which included Justice Aftab Alam, also stayed the ongoing trial.

According to the petition, filed by the widow of the engineer, he was murdered June 15, 2006 at Hardwar, while working in the state government’s Irrigation Department.

The widow alleged that the state police were not pursuing the trial properly because the victim was a Dalit.

She said the police were not bothered even as various witnesses had either turned hostile or had not appeared in the court to depose in the case.
