Robber killed in Mumbai shootout

Mumbai : Crime branch of the Mumbai police Tuesday killed a notorious robber in a shootout near Sahar International Airport here.

Sleuths of the crime branch had gone to arrest Avdesh Babu Singh, when he opened fire at them. The police fired in retaliation, killing him on the spot.

Deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Datta Shinde told IANS that the robber resisted arrest and even challenged the police action by opening fire at the police team.

The police recovered a country-made revolver from which Singh had fired.

Singh was wanted in 18 to 20 cases in which he was charged with robbery, attempt to murder and assault. This included Rs.12 million jewellery robbery in Chembur in late 2007, several dacoities on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway and other places.
