Washington : The U.S. State Department confirmed that an American embassy car was damaged and an embassy employee was slightly injured when a bomb exploded Tuesday in Beirut, Lebanon.
“There were no American diplomats or American citizens in the car at the time,” State Department spokesman Sean McCormack told reporters.
Two embassy employees were in the vehicle damaged in the blast. The driver slightly injured, and the other one was unscathed, McCormack said.
“My understanding is there were four Beirut residents who do not work for the embassy who were killed in the blast,” said the spokesman who could not confirm whether the U.S. embassy car was the target of the bombing.
The last three years have witnessed a series of bomb blasts in Lebanon. The most recent one occurred on Jan. 8, when a U.N. peacekeeping vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb south of Beirut, leaving two Irish peacekeepers injured.
