Ranvijay Singh, 22, a resident of Sultanpur in Uttar Pradesh and activist of the SP’s student wing, during the party’s protest rally Tuesday at Jantar Pantar in New Delhi poured kerosene all over himself and set himself ablaze before his party colleagues could intervene.

Tuesday was also the 52nd birthday of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati, and her party workers celebrated it all over the state.

Ranvijay was rushed to the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital after his immolation bid with 98 percent burns.

“Singh succumbed to his burn injuries Wednesday evening. We have sent the body for post-mortem examination,” said Awanish Chander Dwivedi, in-charge of the Parliament police station.
