Sania advances to women’s doubles third round

Melbourne : India’s Sania Mirza atoned for her singles loss by winning her doubles match and moved into the third round of the women’s doubles event in the Australian Open here Sunday.

Sania and her Australian partner Alicia Molik, seeded sixth, defeated the Russian pair of Nadia Petrova and Elena Vesnina 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 in the second round.

Sania and Molik took 113 minutes to get the better of their unseeded rivals. The duo was clinical in their approach and didn’t commit any double faults while the Russian pair made six double faults.

Sania bowed out of the singles with a fighting 6-7, 4-6 loss to eighth seed Venus Williams of the US in the third round Saturday.

Sania and Molik will face the 12th seeded pair of Victoria Azarenka of Belarus and Shahar Peer of Israel in the third round.

Peer and Azarenka defeated the Swiss duo Emmanuelle Gagliardi and Patty Schnyder 6-3, 6-3 in their second round match.
