Bhopal : A Pakistan national allegedly involved in spying on the activities of the Indian Army was arrested here while two of his associates were arrested from other parts of Madhya Pradesh, the police said Sunday.

Inspector-General (Special Task Force) Sanjeev Kumar Singh told reporters that Imran Qureshi, 34, who hails from Karachi, was arrested in Bhopal Saturday. He had lived at various places in the country, including Kolkata, Mumbai, and Lucknow in the past four years.

“He was in Bhopal for the past four months and since 2003 he has created a network across the country to send information to Pakistan over telephone and e-mails,” Singh said.

Singh also admitted connivance of some army personnel in filtering out information but refused to divulge more details.

According to the police, Qureshi was picked by Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) in 1995 and was sent to Delhi in 2003 to establish the espionage network.

He was helped by Iqbal in procuring documents to get a passport, Singh said.

Qureshi also went to Dhaka and even got married there before returning to India.

The police suspect that Qureshi and his associates were planning some terror activities on the occasion of Republic Day.
