Hyderabad : B. Prasada Rao, an additional director general of police, is likely to be the new police commissioner of Hyderabad.
Rao will succeed Balwinder Singh, who is going on a long leave from Monday. An official announcement is expected soon, sources in the home ministry said Sunday.
Rao, 53, an officer of the 1979 IPS (Indian Police Service) batch, will be the 43rd Kotwal or police commissioner of Hyderabad.
Rao had earlier served as the superintendent of police in three districts and was also the police commissioner of Visakhapatnam and the deputy inspector general of police of the Eluru and Kurnool range.
The government has been searching for the new police commissioner since Jan 7 when Balwinder Singh requested Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy to allow him to proceed on long leave, citing personal reasons.
