Agra’s tourism industry stays jittery

By IANS

Agra : The tourism industry in the city of Taj Mahal continues to be in the jitters though the Gujjar community in Rajasthan has called off proposed sit-in protest on the Agra-Jaipur highway.

The sit-in by the Gujjars to press for their inclusion in Rajasthan’s Scheduled Tribes (ST) list, was planned for Monday. It had led to large-scale cancellation of bookings in Agra hotels.

However the community leaders Sunday put off their protests after talks with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders.

But that decision came too late for the tourism industry here. Hoteliers and travel agents said many tourists had already shifted to Goa and south India.
