Kolkata : Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president Prasun Mukherjee Monday claimed that cricketer Sourav Ganguly was dropped from the One-day team in accordance with the wishes of skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

“Today (Monday) I talked to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Sharad Pawar and he said the official policy is that the board does not interfere with the selection process,” Mukherjee told reporters here.

“Pawar said he was helpless and said he shared our concern. But added that after talking to the people concerned he (Pawar) came to know it was the wish of the captain,” he said.

“He promised to take up the matter with the people concerned. We can’t see the team change overnight, but hopefully things will change,” Mukherjee said.

Kolkata rose in protest after Ganguly was unceremoniously dropped after being given the Man of the Series award during the Pakistan series.

Mukherjee added a captain selects a team to win, “so I am sure there must be something going on the skipper’s mind.”

“But the fact that Ganguly was the most consistent player after his comeback can’t be denied and also the most prolific run-getter in the shorter version of the game,” Mukherjee said.

“If it is true that Dhoni has said Saurav would not play, my first reaction would be Dhoni is not confident enough to play with more senior players around him,” he said.

“If there is any senior player around, it is difficult to dominate. Dhoni wants to dominate his own team. He wants to form his own team,” he added.
