According to the Narayanan family’s friends, the octogenarian was admitted to the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital Dec 31 for blood transfusion after her haemoglobin level dropped drastically.

“She has been ailing for months. Her condition is critical and she has multiple health problems,” said a friend of the family.

“Her two daughters are attending to her and a group of doctors at the hospital is taking care of the wife of the late president,” the friend told IANS, declining to be named.

According to hospital sources, Usha is in the intensive care unit (ICU) and is on ventilator support.

K.R. Narayanan, who died in November 2005, was the first Dalit president of India. He occupied the office from July 25, 1997 to July 25, 2002.
