Sania-Molik ousted in Australian Open doubles

Melbourne : Sixth seeds Sania Mirza of India and Australian Alicia Molik were ousted 5-7, 3-6 by the 12th seeded pair Victoria Azrenka of Belarus and Shahar Peer of Israel in the third round of the Australian Open tennis here Monday.

Azrenka-Peer, who took almost an hour-and-half to win, will meet 13th seeded pair Slovak Janette Husarrova and Italian Flavia Penetta in the women’s doubles quarter-finals.

Husarrova and Penetta beat Chinese Taipei’s Yung-Jan Chan and Chia-Jung Chuang 6-2, 7-6 to enter the last eight stage.

Sania, playing along with her compatriot Mahesh Bhupathi, is still in the running for the mixed doubles title.

The unseeded pair is scheduled to play second seeds Lisa Raymond of the US and Simon Aspelin of Sweden in a pre-quarterfinal match Tuesday.
