Musharraf, Rice to discuss collaboration in war on terror

ISLAMABAD, Jan 22 (NNN-APP) — The US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will meet President Pervez Musharraf soon after he arrives in Davos to attend World Economic Forum on Wednesay, and would discuss various aspects of Pak-US ties with particular reference to Pakistan’s role in the war on terror.

The meeting, at the picturesque Alpine resort of Davos is being seen as highly significant, covering the spate of recent terrorist incidents in Pakistan that led to assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, attacks on security forces and military operations against terrorists and militants.

President Musharraf is likely to apprise Rice about the multi-pronged political, administrative and military strategy being pursued by the country in dealing with militants, the local Taliban terrorists and the extremists.

He will also update her on the measures taken for holding free, fair and transparent election scheduled on Feb 18. The President has been reiterating his commitment to continue ahead with the transition to democracy by holding the polls in a peaceful manner.

Secretary Rice has also been stressing that Pakistan continues to move ahead on the path towards complete democracy by holding a transparent election on time. She will open the World Economic Forum by giving a speech on climate change and terrorism.

President Musharraf during his stay will also meet a number of political and corporate leaders in Davos on the sidelines of WEF. He will arrive in Davos on January 23 on the third leg of his four-nation visit.

The theme of this year’s meeting is “The Power of Collaborative Innovation”.
