Amritsar : A Border Security Force (BSF) officer has died in mysterious circumstances in the Khem Karan sector along the India-Pakistan border, the Punjab police said Wednesday.
BSF assistant commandant H.S. Sandhu, 53, was found dead while he was on duty in the Khem Karan sector, 50 km from here, Tuesday night.
He was rushed to a BSF hospital nearby where doctors declared him brought dead.
Police were questioning four BSF personnel who were accompanying the officer when he died. They told police that Sandhu died after his service carbine went off.
Tarn Taran district police chief P.K. Rai said the mystery of how the automatic weapon went off on its own was being investigated.
The police were still not clear whether it was a case of suicide, murder or accidental firing.
Sandhu, a bachelor, had recently returned to duty from him home in Rajasthan.
