Governor Naval Kishore Sharma and Chief Minister Narendra Modi participated in the function at Vyara, about 300 km from here, along with Chief Secretary Manjula Subramaniam, Director General of Police P.C. Pandey and district officials.

A rousing welcome greeted the dignitaries. This was the first time that the state-level celebrations of the Republic Day were held in the tribal dominated area.

A series of cultural programmes followed which included tribal and folk dances. Various government departments presented 27 attractive tableaux. Star attractions included a dog and horse show. The National Cadet Corps girls platoon bagged the first prize for its outstanding performance.

The governor and the chief minister also greeted freedom fighters of the south Gujarat district, which was created just before the December 2007 assembly elections.
