Kolkata sky expected to clear up Sunday

Kolkata : Kolkata and parts of Gangetic West Bengal can look forward to a respite from rain and chilly winds, from Sunday afternoon, a weather official said here.

“We are expecting the depression to move away from Gangetic West Bengal from Sunday afternoon and the cloudy sky would clear up. But in the next 24 hours, there will be moderate rainfall in Kolkata and its adjoining districts causing a sharp drop in the minimum temperature,” Kolkata Regional Meteorological Centre Director G.C. Debnath told IANS Saturday afternoon.

He said the rainfall has been caused due to a Western disturbance over West Bengal’s neighbouring state Jharkhand. He said it was a normal weather phenomenon during winter.

According to the Met office, the city registered a total rainfall of 28 mm Friday and the maximum temperature was 10 degree below normal.

Winter in Kolkata generally lasts till mid-February and sometimes continues till the third week of the month. But in the past few years, the chill factor has vanished in the first week of February.

The Republic Day function in Kolkata, the second largest after New Delhi, was marred by rain this year.
