Iran, Iraq ink agreement on environment protection

Tehran : Iranian and Iraqi officials signed an eight-article agreement on cooperation in the field of environment protection, the official IRNA news agency reported.

The document was inked by head of Iran’s Department of Environment Fatemeh Vaez-Javadi and Iraqi Minister of Environment Nermin Othman in Tehran.

Speaking to reporters prior to signing the agreement, the Iranian official said the document would facilitate Tehran-Baghdad cooperation for further protection of their natural resources.

According to the document, the two parties are required to cooperate on industrial pollution control, enforce ban on hunting along Iran-Iraq borders and campaign against wildlife epidemic diseases, Vaez-Javadi said.

Promoting ecotourism, reviewing soil, water and air pollution caused by exploitation of oil fields as well as evaluating environmental damage caused by wars formed other topics of the agreement, she added.

Meanwhile, the Iraqi minister, for his part, said that the two parties shared common views on environmental issues.

Othman expressed his hope that promotion of security in Iraq would help further protect the natural resources in the war-torn country.
