The state’s Tribal Research and Development Institute will hold a workshop in Bhopal Feb 18-25 during which 72 people of various tribal groups will gather to discuss the compilation of the dictionary.

This would, perhaps, be the first dictionary to have references to cultural peculiarities and history of various tribal groups. These references would be included in alphabetical order.

Madhya Pradesh’s tribal cultural dictionary would have entries on tribal rites and rituals on the occasions of birth, death, marriage and festivals as well as references about tribal groups’ deities, dances, music, lifestyle and agricultural methods. In fact, it would be an encyclopaedia of tribal culture of Madhya Pradesh.

The Madhya Pradesh Tribal Research and Development Institute had started the work of recording the tribal culture and history of Madhya Pradesh in 2004.

The institute has already published Gondi-Hindi, Bheli-Hindi and Korku-Hindi dictionaries.

Now experts at the institute are planning to compile grammar books of Gondi, Bhili and Korku tribal dialects and collections of their traditional songs.
