London : Michael Foot, former Labour leader and president of the India League, has endorsed Britain’s support to India in its bid for permanent membership of the UN Security Council.
He was speaking Wednesday on the 60th death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, which was observed as Martyrdom Day at Tavistock Square, the north-central London park where India League installed a Gandhi statue in 1968.
Foot said the world should realise the importance of Gandhi’s message of non-violence.
Also present were the mayor of Camden, Indian High Commissioner Kamalesh Sharma and India League secretary S.N. Gaurisaria.
Sharma, paying rich tributes to Gandhi, said it was he who had inspired a great nation like India to become an equal partner with Britain, with the two countries sharing 400 years of historical relations.
