Mexico City : A hen named Rabanita has became a celebrity in central Mexico after it was discovered that she has been laying green eggs, Spain’s news agency EFE reported Wednesday.
“It’s not a hen that lays golden eggs, but one whose eggs are green,” said Raul Ortiz, municipal secretary in Cuautitlan, north of the capital, Tuesday.
But Rabanita’s green eggs have also a touch of gold, so to say. Officials are hoping that the hen, which already has generated a lot of media attention, could become a huge tourist attraction that will boost the local economy.
The hen could be an exotic species, such as a Guinea or Araucana chicken, common in South America, but not in Mexico, local daily Reforma quoted an expert as saying Tuesday.
The wonder hen is owned by Elvira Romero, who lives in the Santa Maria Huecatitla neighbourhood.
Rabanita’s owner told reporters that several weeks ago when she saw the bird laying a green egg, she thought it was rotten, but later she noticed the eggs were normal, except for the colour. The eggs tasted just fine, she said.
