Uttar Pradesh : Are Hindu communal forces planning to make Uttar Pradesh another Gujarat?. Buoyant with its consecutive success in Gujarat Assembly elections under the leadership of state Chief Minister Narendra Modi, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has decided to use him to mobilize Hindu votes in Uttar Pradesh.
Modi, who earned world notoriety for Gujarat 2002 pogrom wherein thousands of Muslims were massacred, will address Prevention of Terrorism rallies across the state. The rallies will be organized by the BJP in February and March 2008.
In the recent past, Uttar Pradesh has witnessed several terrorism attacks. More importantly, scores of Muslims have been arrested in the connection of these attacks, true to the virtual acknowledgement by the media and establishment that terrorism attacks can be carried out only by Muslims. Besides addressing these rallies, Modi will tour through villages in a bid to tilt the electoral atmosphere in favour of the party. In this context, it is feared that the rallies will poison the communal atmosphere of the state and may ultimately benefit the party.
