Pakistan has no intention to enter into arms race — PM

Islamabad : Pakistan is a peaceful country and has no intention of entering an arms race in the region, said Pakistani Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani Thursday.

Speaking at a parade in the Pakistan Naval Academy, PNS, he added that his country would maintain a minimum credible deterrence to ensure peace in the region and to maintain the ongoing process of the country’s economic development.

Moreover, he said that Pakistan sought to promote its national interests as it believed in peaceful co-existence and mutual respect.

The government is fully aware of the importance of Pakistan’s maritime potential, he said, adding, “we will continue to meet the requirements of Pakistan Navy in all respects.” He said Pakistan had been in the forefront of the international war on terror. “Being a victim of terrorism ourselves, we condemn terrorism and are committed to defeat it,” he added.
