Kabul : Unknown gunmen Friday night shot dead a famous parliament member Haji Habibullah in Jalai district of southern Afghanistan’s Kandahar province, an official said on Saturday.
Maiz Mohammad Sardy, the district chief, told Xinhua that it occurred around 9:30 p.m. (1700 GMT) when a group of gunmen came to Haji Habibullah’s house and shot at him just in front of the gate.
Haji Habibullah, an influential lawmaker in Afghan government and tribal elder in the Pashtun inhabited Kandahar province, was killed on the spot, Sardy said.
No one has claimed responsibility for the incident.
Afghanistan has witnessed a surge of violence and riot throughout the south to the east since Taliban militants launched a jail break on June 13.
Militancy and conflicts have claimed the lives of more than 2,000 people with some 700 civilians so far this year in Afghanistan.
