Ramallah : Palestinian Presidency studies proposals for reconciliation between Hamas and President Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah, an aide to Abbas said on Monday.
Abbas’ political advisor Nemer Hamad added that the proposals were presented to Abbas by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on behalf of Hamas which has its political bureau in Damascus.
The proposals were handed during a meeting between Abbas and al-Assad on Sunday in Damascus. “We are still studying the possibility of dealing with these suggestions,” Hamad said.
But Hamad says resuming the inter-Palestinian dialogue will be possible “if Hamas became convinced that what it has done in Gaza was a disastrous thing.”
Hamas routed pro-Abbas forces and ousted Fatah movement in deadly fighting in Gaza last year.
“If Hamas agreed to return to the pre-coup status, returned the security headquarters and the presidency offices to President Abbas, rebuild the security services and holding early elections, a successful way for the dialogue will open,” Hamad said.
Last month, Abbas said he wants to talk to Hamas but the Islamic movement did not take steps paving the way for the dialogue though it welcomed Abbas’ idea.
