Brussels : The President of the European Parliament, Hans-Gert P?ttering, announced Wednesday that he has decided not to attend the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Beijing on 8 August because talks between the envoys of the Dalai Lama with the Chinese authorities did not produce any results.
“Given that these talks have to date proved inconclusive, I have decided not to attend the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games,” he said in a statement.
Poettering noted with great regret that the meetings between the envoys of the Dalai Lama – Mr Lodi Gyari and Mr Kelsang Gyaltsen – with the Chinese authorities at the beginning of July in Beijing have not led to any result concerning Tibet.
“We expect that China, will respect its own public commitments to human rights and minority rights announced when the decision to allow China to organise the Games was taken,” he added.
