A day after formally declaring that it would back the Manmohan Singh government on the India-US nuclear deal and on the floor of the Lok Sabha, party leader Amar Singh told reporters: “There was little confusion in the public mind following the political differences that erupted during the last assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh. We wanted to clear the confusion and so we met the president to reiterate the support of the Samajwadi Party to the Congress-led UPA government.”

The letter lists the names of all those who won the elections on the Samajwadi party symbol, he said.

He said Baleshwar Yadav, an independent, had also joined the party. “He will also be voting for the government,” he added.

The support of the Samajwadi Party and its 39 MPs is seen as crucial for the survival of the UPA government that was reduced to a minority Tuesday with the Left withdrawing support over differences on the nuclear deal.
