Iran seeks closer ties with China, support for nuclear programme

Beijing : Iran Monday said it seeks closer economic and political cooperation with China and support for its nuclear programme, the official IRNA news agency reported.

In a meeting with Chinese Assistant foreign minister Zhai Jun, Iran’s deputy foreign minister Mohammad-Ali Hosseini said while Tehran was keen to expand cooperation in all fields, bilateral economic ties offered great potential.

Hosseini is currently visiting China.

Tehran expects China, as well as all its friendly countries, to express support for the country’s nuclear programme and its close cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency, Hosseini said.

Hosseini is carrying a message from President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to Chinese President Hu Jintao.

He said the Shahab-3 category missile test by Iran July 9 by the Islamic republic was aimed at securing peace in the region as well as displaying Iran’s combat readiness.
