National seminar on “Promotion and Development of Urdu” to be held at Jamia

New Delhi: The Outreach Programme of the Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), in collaboration with the Sir Syed Foundation, is organising a three-day national seminar on ‘Promotion and Development of Urdu: Issues and Perspectives’ from 18-20 July 2008.

Vice President of India Hamid Ansari will be the Chief Guest at the Inaugural Function on Friday, 18th July in the Auditorium of Faculty of Engineering, JMI. The Vice Chancellor, Prof Musirul Hasan, will be the Guest of Honour and Prof Naseer Ahmad Khan, Emirates Fellow, UGC, JNU, shall deliver the Introductory Address.

The working sessions of the seminar shall continue over the next two days in the Arafat Hall, JMI covering a range of issues concerning Urdu, such as Urdu journalism, the role of Urdu in the print and electronic media, translations into and from Urdu, the civic institutions devoted to the development and promotion of Urdu, the overlap with Hindi, and the teaching of Urdu at the higher level.

The seminar is expected to draw scholars, critics and teachers of Urdu as well as media persons from different parts of the country
