Damascus : Syrian President Bashar al-Assad met with visiting Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki on Thursday to discuss regional developments and bilateral ties.
Mottaki conveyed to Assad a message from Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on coordination over regional issues, according to an Iranian diplomatic source.
The Iranian top diplomat said upon his arrival in Syria earlier that his scheduled visit is intended to tackle bilateral relations and boost regional stability.
Mottaki’s visit followed Assad’s recent tour to France. Assad met French President Nicolas Sarkozy on July 12 and said Iran was not seeking atomic weapons. Sarkozy asked him to use his influence with Iran to help ease Tehran’s nuclear standoff.
Syria is the second leg of Mottaki’s three-nation tour in West Asia, which includes Oman, Syria and Turkey.
