US Latinos Organize Nat’l Congress

Washington : Groups of US-based Hispanic immigrants are seeking to strengthen their vote at the upcoming general elections, according to the organizers of a Third National Latino Congress.

The source said that the meeting, scheduled for July 18-19 in Los Angeles, would analyze the social and economic situation of that minority, which accounts for 15 percent of the US population.

We will specifically debate the migration and education reforms, environmental protection and access to public health and social security, they said.

On the first day, we will focus on the presidential elections, while on the second day, we will take those issues to the local and legislative elections.

According to the activists, presidential candidates Barack Obama (Democrat) and John McCain (Republican) have announced their participation in the forum.

Experts said the two candidates are desperately trying to win the Hispanic votes.

Among the organizations that will attend the congress are the Hispanic Federation, the National Hispanic Environmental Council, the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), the Mexican-American Legal Defense and Education Fund, and the Southwest Voter Registration Education Project (SVREP).
