Maulana Azad birthday to be observed as ‘National Education Day’

New Delhi: No, it is not going to be another national holiday. Central Government has decided to observe Maulana Abul Kalam Azad’s birthday which falls on November 11th as ‘National Education Day.’

Maulana Azad was the first education minister of India. There have been demands from various sections to declare it an Education Day in his honour.

Ministry of Human Resource Development has decided to observe this day by highlighting Maulana’s contributions for education in India. Plans for IIT were made under his ministership. Seminars, symposia, essay-writing, and various competitions will be organized to promote the importance of literacy and challenges for education, every year on this day.

“The focus of activities on the ‘National Education Day’ would be on the various initiatives taken in Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), in setting up of model schools in secondary education, on initiatives taken in higher secondary education, vocational education and higher education sectors by the Central Government on its own, as well as through Private-Public Partnership,” a release from HRD ministry said.
