Pakistan’s top official to meet Advani Sunday

New Delhi : With Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s government precariously placed ahead of the confidence vote in parliament, Pakistan is taking no chances with its Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir seeking a meeting with BJP’s prime ministerial candidate L.K. Advani Sunday.

The meeting with Advani will be his only engagement on Sunday after he flies here from Amritsar Sunday afternoon for the official level dialogue, diplomatic sources said.

It’s usual for visiting foreign dignitaries to meet the leader of opposition, but the timing of the meeting, in view of the trust vote in parliament Tuesday, is now being seen by some as Pakistan’s efforts to build bridges with the opposition party which may come to power after the next elections.

Foreign secretaries of India and Pakistan will launch the fifth round of composite dialogue here Monday in the shadow of the suicide attack on the Indian mission in Kabul that New Delhi has blamed on the “evil” designs of the Pakistani intelligence agency, ISI.
