Samajwadi Party engineers defection from BJP, blasts Left

New Delhi, July 20 (IANS) Down but not out, the Samajwadi Party Sunday evening said it had got sitting Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Braj Bhushan Sharan Singh in its fold and that he would vote in favour of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government in Tuesday’s confidence motion.

Addressing mediapersons at his residence here, Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh presented before the media the BJP MP from Balrampur seat along with some Samajwadi Party MPs who were earlier thought to have deserted the party.

“We have shown you this. We still have many more envelopes (of support) that we will open only on Tuesday. The UPA is not doomed, it has bloomed,” he said.

He also hit back at the Left parties in general and communist leader Prakash Karat in particular for pointing fingers at the Samajwadi Party. He named all top Left leaders and recalled specific instances to show how they had allegedly betrayed his party.

“We have not betrayed anyone, we have been betrayed by the Left parties. They conspired against our party by taking me to (Congress chief) Sonia Gandhi’s dinner in 2004 but ensured that the Samajwadi Party never got on board in the UPA. They did not want the Left blackmail to end in the UPA so they never allowed us into the UPA fold,” Amar Singh said.
