“The decision has been taken since the large catchment areas of Sardar Sarovar, Indira Sagar and Omkareshwar project reservoirs, falling under the Narmada Valley projects, are required to be looked after with scientific treatment so that the long life of these reservoirs is sustained,” said Pradeep Bhargawa, NVDA vice chairman.

Of the total 98,796 sq km basin of the Narmada river, 89,850 sq km basin area falls in Madhya Pradesh and silting of reservoirs here has been the major cause affecting the life of the reservoirs.

As such, controlling flow of silt in major reservoirs has become a challenging task, Bhargawa told IANS.

“Special emphasis would, therefore, be given on these catchment pockets. Besides various soil treatments, compensatory afforestation on these areas would also be taken up,” he said.
