New Delhi : Concerned over the dwindling numbers of the red jungle fowl, the government is preparing an action plan for its conservation, the environment ministry said Friday.

“On the basis of lesser sightings of the bird in its natural habitat, a decline in its population appears to have taken place,” said the ministry, adding that a specialist group will prepare the action plan soon.

The government has no scientific study on the population estimates of the bird.

However, considering the fewer sightings, National Board of Wildlife approved the creation of a specialist group. The Wildlife Institute of India at Dehradun has also begun a research project on conservation of the species.

Domestic chickens are said to have evolved from the red jungle fowl.
