Himachal high court stays arrest of Supermax chairman

Shimla : The Himachal Pradesh High Court has stayed the arrest of R.K. Malhotra, chairman of blade manufacturing company Supermax, in the July 1 shooting case at a company unit in the state.

Staying the arrest, Justice Surinder Singh Friday directed Malhotra to cooperate in the investigation and ordered that if he is unwell, his lawyer should inform the investigating officer within 10 days regarding his non-availability at Shimla.

Malhotra, who is based in Mumbai, was also told not to leave the country without the permission of the court.

According to the prosecution, private security guards fired at agitating workers in the premises of a company factory at Shogi town, 10 km from here, killing one worker and injuring five.

The police had booked company officials, including Malhotra, under charges including that of murder.

The workers have been staging protests against the company management since the incident and demanding Rs.150,000 in compensation for the family of their colleague who was killed in the incident, reinstatement of nine employees and reopening of the company.
