The first bomb exploded at 1645 GMT. It was placed in a rubbish bin near a crowded street in Gungoren suburb on the European side of Istanbul, the NTV television station reported.

The second blast occurred 10 to 12 minutes later, some 50 metres away from the site of the first blast, Istanbul Governor Muammer Gulertold told reporters at the scene of the blast.

Witnesses told NTV television that many people had gone to inspect the scene of the first blast when the second bomb exploded.

The report quoted intelligence officials as saying they believed the Kurdish Workers’ Party (PKK) may have been behind the attack.
