11 dead in bus collision in E Philippines

Manila : At least 11 people died and scores were injured when two buses collided in the Philippines’ eastern province of Camarines Sur early Tuesday morning, local media reported.

The incident took place along the Maharlika Highway in Pamplona town at some 4:15 a.m., Philippine news network Inquirer.net reported.

The collision involved a Naga City-bound Executive Carrier bus from Metro Manila and a Silver Star bus from Tacloban City in Leyte bound for Metro Manila, local radio dzMM reported.

One of the vehicles were split to pieces in the strong clash, some survivors told reporters. Passengers injured have been brought to the Bicol Medical Center in Naga City.

Eight victims died on the spot as three others succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment. At least 27 more injured persons are still undergoing treatment in the medical center.

Of the eight people who died on the spot, five were from the Silver Star bus while the remaining three were on board the Executive Carrier bus, reports said, citing an ambulance driver at the site.

Local authorities were quoted as saying the two buses were traveling on opposite sides of the highway when the Silver Star bus crossed over to the opposite lane and slammed into the incoming Executive Carrier bus.

Police are still investigating the incident.
