New Delhi : Main cities across India, including the capital, have been placed on alert in the wake of two days of serial bomb attacks in Bangalore and Ahmadabad.
A wave of 16 synchronized bomb explosions on Saturday night rocked 13 localities in Ahmadabad, the largest city in western Gujarat state, killing 45 people and wounding another 162 so far, Times Now TV news reported.
Explosions were registered in Maninagar, Isanpur, Narol, Bapunagar, Hatkeshwar, Sarangpur Bridge, Sarkhej, Odhav, the Sardar Patel market, the Civil Hospital, Juhapura, the Ambur tower building and Raipur.
Previously, eight bombs had exploded in a similar number of places in Bangalore on Friday, killing two people and wounding another 25.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and President Pratibha Patil condemned the attacks, decreed national alert and urged the people to keep calm.
This is the third occasion in three months and a half that three Indian cities are targets of serial bomb attacks.
On May 13, eight bombs exploded, killing 65 people and wounding another 150 in Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan.
Before the bombs started to explode, a self-denominated Indian Mujahiddin group addressed an e-mail message to a TV channel, claiming responsibility for the attacks.
This group had claimed responsibility for the attacks in Jaipur and against Uttar Pradesh courts in November 2007.
Following the lead of this message, investigators searched an apartment in Sanpada, Navi Mimbay, where agents found a computer, which is being analyzed now.
Today, Interior Minister Shrivaj Patil presided over an emergency meeting to discuss security, as main cities, including the capital, remain on alert.
