“Pakistani soldiers started firing at our positions on our side of the LoC in Nowgam again today,” Indo Asian News Service reported, quoting Defence Ministry spokesman Lt. Col. A.K. Mathur.

“Indian troopers are maintaining restraint. We have asked the Pakistani soldiers to end firing so that the situation does not deteriorate,” Lt. Col. Mathur said.

Last Monday, a group of 15 Pakistani soldiers had crossed the LoC in the same sector. One Indian soldier was killed in the exchange of fire. LoC divides Indian-administered and Pakistan-administered Jammu and Kashmir.

India Tuesday lodged a strong protest against the unprovoked firing. Indian Defence Minister A.K. Antony has also asked Pakistan to honour the ceasefire which is being maintained by the two countries along the LoC since November 2003.

In this month alone, there have been at least seven instances of ceasefire violations by Pakistan. India had raised the issue with Pakistan at the Foreign Secretary level meeting here on July 21.
