Geneva : According to the Press Emblem Campaign (PEC), three journalists have lost their lives in the line of duty during the month of July, one in Cambodia, one in Iraq and one in Zimbabwe.
The new figures step up the number of journalists killed since the beginning of the year to 48.
PEC President Hedayat Abdel Nabi said that this reduction is part of the pressure mounted by press campaigners all over the world to spare journalists the brunt of conflict.
Abdel Nabi stressed that an important component of media work is to be at the frontline of danger, noting the need for added protection for journalists in the field, a position the PEC defends since its inception.
The PEC Secretary-General Blaise Lempen this is good news that there is a reduction in the number of journalists killed, this is the first time in months that the tally among journalists has gone down.
Lempen expressed hope that this trend would be reinforced in the coming months.
