Lal, 77, was accompanied by his son Kuldip Bishnoi for the oath-taking ceremony. His elder son and Haryana Deputy Chief minister Chander Mohan was absent from the ceremony.

Lal won the Adampur by-election May 25 after he was disqualified from the assembly seat March this year for joining his new party, Haryana Janhit Congress (HJC). He was elected in 2005 on a Congress ticket.

Assembly Speaker Raghubir Singh Kadian said after the oath-taking ceremony that the HJC was not a recognized political party in the state and Lal could not be called its legislator.

“He has been elected as an Independent and will remain so. If he joins the HJC when it is recognized, he will have to quit the seat again and seek re-election,” Kadian said.
