Karnataka, Goa and Services in Santosh Trophy quarters

Srinagar : Karnataka, Goa and Services Monday won their knock-out matches to join hosts Jammu and Kashmir in the quarter-final round of the Santosh Trophy championships being played here.

Karnataka won the first match of the day against Haryana by two goals to one in a nail-biting finish.

Sanath Kumar of Karnataka scored early in 7th minute of the game on a dribble pass. Haryana striker Sandeep struck in the 27th minute to level the score.

Karnataka players played well in the second half and rolled the ball throughout the field by excellent one-touch passing.

As Haryana started to play defensive, Sanath scored on a deflection in the 25th minute of second half to give his team the desired 2-1 lead to qualify for the quarter finals.

At GGM Science College in Jammu, Services thrashed Tamil Nadu in a one-sided affair by five goals to nil.

Sahaji D’silva scored a hattrick, two in the first half and third goal in the second half. Raleng and Narish also added to the score for Services.

In the rain delayed encounter at Polo Grounds in Srinagar, Goa won the match against Railways on a penalty shoot-out by 4-3, after both teams found it hard to score on a wet grassy field.

Both teams could not find the target though they got a couple of close chances. John Dias of Goa and Pankaj Sura of Railways were excellent in holding the ball throughout the game.

The momentum of the match was high in the extra time of 30 minutes as it went without finding a decider. Goa players handled the pressure well to strike four out of five kicks into the net against three goals out of five by a dejected Railways.

For Railways, Amrinder Singh and Suraj Mandal missed their penalties, while Nipolas Roderick missed one for the winners.
