Asif was returning to Pakistan from Mumbai via Dubai when he was held, officials said. Unconfirmed reports said he carried hashish.

The fast bowler, in the Delhi Daredevils team in the Indian Premier League (IPL) tournament, was in Mumbai for the semi-final match against Rajasthan Royals Friday. He is reported to have taken a weekend flight to Dubai on his way home.

Official sources in IPL said Asif may be banned from future editions of the tournament if he was found guilty.

“We’re waiting to hear from the authorities in Dubai,” an official said on telephone on condition of anonymity.

Various players were tested for dope during the IPL tournament that ended Sunday.

IPL officials were trying to ascertain if Asif was one of those tested last week. If so, they would submit the sample for re-analysis, the official said.

The International Cricket Council (ICC), which has its headquarters here, is also watching the situation.
