Gaza : A leader of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) on Wednesday threatened to storm Egyptian border if Israeli blockade on the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip remains in place.
Osama al-Muzini’s threat was made as he warned from “public explosion,” adding that the angry people’s outburst “will go in all directions” and that Rafah border crossing with Egypt “will be one of these directions.”
“The results of the explosion will be hard because we, in Gaza, have no more things to lose,” al-Muzini continued, referring to the Israeli closure of all crossing points into Gaza which occurred a year ago when Hamas violently seized control of the coastal Strip.
Egypt also maintained the closure of Rafah crossing after European Union monitors and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ forces left the passage as a result of the Hamas’ takeover of Gaza. According to a U.S.-brokered deal, the terminal can not be open without the presence of the monitors and the pro-Abbas forces.
Over the past weeks, Hamas started to send its supporters to demonstrate in front of the closed crossing points every week. The peaceful demonstrations will become “of something else” if the closure lasts, according to al-Muzini.
Meanwhile, al-Muzini said Hamas refuses possible extension of President Mahmoud Abbas’ term. “After his term ends in Jan. 25, 2009, we will not recognize Abbas as a president.”
A power struggle between Hamas and Abbas’ Fatah, started when Hamas won parliamentary elections in 2006, has culminated with Hamas routing pro-Abbas forces from the Gaza Strip last June. Abbas dismissed Hamas government and formed a western-backed cabinet ruling from West Bank while Hamas kept on control of Gaza.
