New Delhi : Due to heavy losses faced by the State-run oil companies, the Indian government is likely to raise prices of petroleum products on Wednesday.
The projected loss of these companies is around Rs 246,000 crore revenue so far, the sources said. One crore: ten million
However, Indian External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee said the government is still discussing the issue. The Cabinet meeting is scheduled Wednesday (today) to take a decision. Media reports quoting sources said that LPG price may also be hiked by Rs 20 a cylinder.
Indian government has been postponing the decision on raising prices of petroleum products for the last several days as the decision will trigger price spiral in the country.
The Congress-led government has held several meetings in the past and even Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has held four rounds with UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi on this crucial issue as the Congress is preparing for the forthcoming general elections expected to be held in the beginning of next year.
