Islamabad : Hours after security was placed on red alert in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, police seized three explosive-laden vehicles in neighboring Rawalpindi and arrested at least three would-be suicide bombers, said police on Friday.
Acting on a tip, police conducted a raid in Jinnah town of Rawalpindi late Thursday night, police sources told KUNA.
They said three explosive-laden vehicles were impounded and at least three would-be suicide bombers were arrested.
Sources said the suspects were going to target the presidential camp and other vital government installations. They added that near 25 kilograms of explosives had been planted in the vehicles.
Rehman Malik, the prime minister’s advisor on interior affairs, talking to newsmen said that six terrorists, including three suicide bombers, were arrested last night and that they had wanted to target important buildings.
Sources said further that one of the arrested suspects appeared to be of foreign national, while the rest are locals.
Last night, security in Islamabad was placed on red alert and police increased patrolling in the capital.
The latest arrest comes three days after a suicide attack targeted the Danish Embassy, killing eight people and wounding 24 others, mostly foreigners.
A local news channel, citing sources, said that it was revealed from initial investigations that explosives found in the vehicle were of same nature as were used in car explosion outside Danish Embassy.
