Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL), which took over the state-run IPCL following divestment by the government, ordered an inquiry to determine what led to the incident in the plant, located about 95 km from here.

A statement issued by RIL said that three people had been killed, while an earlier statement had put the death toll at four.

RIL’s statement said that a fire broke out at 11.20 a.m. when routine maintenance work was on in one section of LLDPE plant No. 2 in the Nagothane petrochemical facility.

The seriously injured victims were taken to the Harkisondas Hospital in south Mumbai. The rest are being treated at the Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital within the IPCL complex, the police said.

RIL said that the fire was brought under control and extinguished within minutes of the “unfortunate” incident, and that services to consumers would not be affected.

The company added that the rest of the Nagothane complex is functioning normally.
